A Survival Guide for the Holidays

When the Holidays Trigger Anxiety

Imagine this:

You’re untangling a strand of Christmas lights that were clearly rolled by a well-meaning 3-year-old. You’re trying to be festive while your insides are performing a Broadway musical titled: “O Come, All Ye Overwhelmed” On top of it all, the holidays are marketed like a warm Hallmark movie, but they feel more like a Netflix thriller. Rated: Emotionally Intense. Viewer Discretion Advised.

If your inner monologue has been saying:

• “Everyone else seems fine. Why do I feel anxious?”

• “I love Jesus, but I also want to hide in the bathroom until January.”

• “If one more person says Merry Christmas with that much energy…”

Welcome. You are among friends.

Why Your Brain Freaks Out in December

Your nervous system loves predictability.

The holidays are the opposite of predictable.

  • Your routine shifts.

  • Your sleep thins.

  • Your emotions multiply.

Your brain is doing its best to keep you safe from:

  • Emotional overload

  • Too many decisions

  • That one relative you’ve avoided all year who now has you cornered

Anxiety is not a sign that faith disappeared. It’s your body waving a tiny (or big) flag saying:

“This is a lot for a person.”

Even Jesus Entered Holiday Chaos

Picture it:

  • A teenage couple

  • Miles of travel

  • Zero reservations

  • A manger crib

  • Unexpected guests with livestock energy

The first Christmas was messy and holy in the same breath. Meaning: if your December has chaos, you’re staying close to the original story.

You’re Not Broken — You’re Overloaded

God created alarms in the human body. Anxiety is one of them. The signal shows you care. It shows something truly matters.

It shows you have heart. A weary heart is not a failure. It’s a heart still fighting for joy.

5 Soul-Saving Holiday Practices

1. Lower the Bar

Your home doesn’t need to audition for a magazine. It can be a home where humans exhale.

2. Choose One Thing and Make It Holy

Start your morning with prayer. Read Luke 2 slowly. Take a mental gratitude journey over a cup of coffee.

Small rituals become your safe space.

3. Leave Early if You Need To

Jesus took breaks in the middle of ministry. Permission granted.

4. Protect “Your Time” Like a Treasure

Rest before you unravel. Your soul deserves breathing space.

5. Laugh More

Humor rewires stress. Tell your brain joy still exists.

Peace Isn’t a Performance

Peace is not something we must manufacture. Peace is Someone already here.

“Emmanuel” means God with us.” Matthew 1:23

Especially when our hands tremble, or our chest tightens, or our thoughts race through silent nights.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

Christ doesn’t wait for calm conditions. He steps into the tension with you.
